O.J. Simpson’s Legacy Marred By Racism

O.J. Simpson ‘died without penance,’ attorney for Ron Goldman’s family says as reaction begins trickling in and Caitlyn Jenner tweeted “good riddance”. Racist remarks considering Simpson was acquitted in the 1994 slaying of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. He was later found liable for their deaths by a jury in a civil trial.

The Heisman Trophy Winner

O.J. Simpson became USC’s second Heisman Trophy winner (Mike Garrett Won in 1965) in 1968 when he won the award by the largest margin in history. Six USC players have gone onto win the Heisman since O.J. including Reggie Bush whose Heisman Trophy was revoked in 2006 for accepting cash and other benefits which would be legal today under NIL rules. The Heisman committee never revoked or voided Simpson’s standing as the 1968 Heisman winner.

During the regular 1968 season, O.J. set an NCAA record for yards rushing –1,709–in a single season (since beaten). A two-time unanimous All- American, he equaled or bettered 19 NCAA, conference and USC records.

Simpson also held the NFL single season rushing record of 2,003 yards set in 1973 and finished his 11- year pro career as the second leading NFL career rusher behind Jim Brown.

O.J. Simpson’s Film Career

I don’t recall O.J. Simpson as a great football player but knew him from his roles on films such as the movie Naked Gun with Leslie Nilsen which was hilarious as a kid.

Conclusion

O.J. Simpson’s life was marred by racism until his death because his ex-wife was murdered and he was a black man in America. The media continues to portray him as the culprit, considering that Simpson was acquitted. Its troubling that Ron Goldman’s attorney and Caitlyn Jenner made insensitive racist remarks about his death opposed to acknowledging Simpson’s incredible legacy in sports and popular culture.
